Your rights (courtesy of the Financial Services Authority (FSA))

Shopping around is your responsibility. But you also have rights to:

  • firms that are financially sound and trustworthy
  • salespeople and advisers who are competent
  • information on which to base your decisions
  • clear procedures for making a complaint
  • compensation if something goes wrong

The way that regulation protects your rights varies according to the types of product you buy. It also depends on whether you were given advice or whether you decided to buy without advice.
With most products and services, the regulations give some protection if you are negligently or fraudulently advised to take out a product which turns out to be unsuitable. If you decide to buy without taking any advice, you are responsible for your choice. If in doubt, get advice

Your rights are different depending on what type of insurance you buy:

Home, motor and general insurance
Anyone can set themselves up as a general insurance adviser without any licence or special training. But most advisers have joined a voluntary system of regulation operated by the General Insurance Standards Council (GISC). GISC members agree to abide by a code of practice.

Life insurance

The rules protecting you when you buy this type of insurance are the same as for investments.

Term insurance

There is no investment element to term insurance. The Insurance Companies Act 1982 and an ABI code of practice protect you when you buy.
